Starting this body of work I initially gathered words, objects and experiences which spoke to the theme of undergrowth, considering it from both a physical and philosophical standpoint. Thoughts swelled around growth and companion planting, planting with companions, things at the allotment holding up other things, unexpectedly strong connections, grasses growing strong through netting, collective support systems, purple flowers thriving whilst wrapped around barbed wire, roots that grow around brick, people supporting other people. All evoking the quiet enduring forces that pulse through nature.
To:
persist / endure / linger / flourish / energise / hide / weave / connect
This work is a translation of these experiences into language of their own.
Undergrowth was presented at County Hall Pottery 13 January - 8 March 2026, curated by Elizabeth Jackson & Emily Stapleton Jefferies. Accompanying text by Tana West can be found here.
