mmm, 2021

This piece was created for Ride Your Pony, an exhibition which took place at Abingdon Studios where each participant was given a letter as a starting point for making a work. Intially being given the letter ‘m’ I was drawn to the sound that it makes and which is a word used in everyday parlance. In particular I started thinking about the deliciousness of ‘mmm’, and how I might make something delicious in clay, a translation into material. However I soon realised that ‘mmm’ has so many meanings and is perceived with wildly different interpretations that I should instead think about ‘mmm’ as just that, a carrier of many various meanings. So using only extrusions, in all it’s various forms, I set about creating arrangements which might express or represent the enthusiasm, uncertainty, excitement, dubiousness, deliciousness and more of ‘mmm’, leaving it open to the interpretation of the viewer and what it arouses in them.
